Self-Recognition and Embarrassment :: essays research papers

Self-Recognition and EmbarrassmentOur groups task was to measure self-recognition and embarrassment in children ages 1-3. We had 3 children to work with, Arika was 9 months, Charlotte was 17 months and Lydia was 28 months old. We preformed 3 tasks on these children. The first was the Overcompliment situation. Secondly, we did the Mirror situation and last we did the Request to dance situation. Our findings in these situations lead us to some conclusions around self-awareness and feeling embarrassed. The procedure we used was a fairly simple one, but it needed to be followed to get accurate results. The first task we did was the Overcompliment situation. With the hidden motion-picture show camera running, we played with the children for a few minutes so they could get as used to us as they would in that short period of time. thusly we proceeded to give them compliment after compliment, for example you are so pretty, good job, youre doing great. After doing this you should feel a i tty-bitty embarrassed yourself. This task is used to see how the child reacts to the barrage of compliments. If they keep playing as they were, make eye contact periodically, they most likely werent embarrassed. But if they keep their head down away from the experimenter or have a silly, self-conscious smile they probably are embarrassed. Our first Overcompliment experiment was with Charlotte. She showed no reaction to Kellie giving her numerous compliments she just played without even looking at her. This does not necessarily mean that Charlotte had no feelings about Kellies compliments in fact it probably means that she was more embarrassed than anything. When it was Lydias turn to go Mia and I watched her play for a few minutes, then began the onslaught of compliments. Lydia didnt even acknowledge the fact that we were speaking to her. I think she did realize that we were saying how good she was doing and because of that she played more aggressively. She never looked at either o f us, she never looked to her mother for comfort or to see why these people were saying these things to her, she just kept playing with her trains. Table 1 board in monthsReaction21-24 of all children20It was common, but not expected 15-18 of all children9-12No children reactedThe second task was the mirror situation. This experiment was first make by R. Amsterdam in 1972 on Chimpanzees.

Valentine’s Day

With Valentines Day approaching, I plan some cheer in the lives of college students. I prepare hundreds of love poems by the famous and the disreputable on slips of paper to be tossed in a basket and passed around the classroom. And we share poems in April during National Poetry Month. Last December when we read A Christmas Memory by Truman Capote, I noted that not one student in class had ever tasted fruitcake. I made some and brought it in for a taste test (ingredient list on BB to avoid any exclusivelyergies). My students always bed the home acidulate and what is expected, but I like to bring in the unexpected. They know that for me education should be fun BUT education is never a joke. I grew up in dreadful Appalachian poverty, the only one in a large extended family to attend college. My students know the story. If a person works hard, most of life works out and brings rewards. I demand that they work hard. I behave been teaching for almost 40 years.I am not shy about callin g a student into my office and using the metaphorical stick to say you are brilliant. Why are you so casual about your studies? I receive emails or letters from students to let me know how life worked out for them. One of the young men whom I had reprimanded in my office for taking his studies too frivolously sent a note that he had just received his PH D and had accepted a position as a Superintendent of Schools in Connecticut.I have served on every committee and volunteer to mentor young faculty. I understand that at my age, they must say she is still excited to enter the classroom after all these years. What is the secret? I have presented at both national and international conferences. About five years ago I began to question the value of our broadcast in developmental education. That led to much research, a chance meeting with Peter Adams of Community College of Baltimore who became my mentor.I knew that our administration and Trustees would not consider class sizes of eighter from Decatur (Peters recommendation and practice) so I devised a triad system. Two classes of ENGL 101 (nine developmental students nestled into the 20 in each section). The two nines join later in the support class of eighteen. We have had phenomenal results in both retention and graduation. When the need arose recently for an Honors program, I stepped up to get that curriculum going.Students expose by my office to chat or to ask that I listen. When a student enters, I place everything aside and am in that moment. I have been voted Faculty of the Year twice by students and was presented with the Lindback Teaching Excellence Award. I look forward to every day with my students and with my colleagues in the community college.

Furthermore, as an Information Technology Company, Telecity Group has been highly relying on high and new technology to attract new customers and increase benefits. Thus, more than effort has been put into familys ability to innovate new products and services in statuss of data accessibility, security and specialty. Focusing on evaluating the slaying of its issue strategy, this paper will analyse it is financial statement base on the basic financial ratios.Ratios Analysis Introduction This section will label Telecity Group plcs financial ratios in detail. Other than looking at the past and present performance trends of the Group, this essay will also discoer the companys financial performance in comparison to selective informationcenter industry overall. Consequently, company management team will be able to determine the short term forecast of future performance. Furthermore, the analysis in this section can give guidance to investors by providing data and giving realistic view of Telecity Groups inancial position and comparison to the industry. gainfulness Ratios Given the important role pelf plays as financing both dividends to shareholders and retained earnings, it is the main nib of financial performance. persona 1 Profitability Ratios (GPM- Gross profit valuation reserve, OPM- Operational profit margin) As can be seen from figure 2, the take in profit was dramatically change magnitude from 52% to 56 % through socio-economic class 2010, and there was impressively improvement for year 2011.This can be explained by companys successfully death penalty of its growth strategy. On one side, driven by the high demanding of digital economy, the company has been focusing on increasing earnings by expanding data centre capacity and adopting new technology. On the other hand, along with the growth there is high cost. However, the even higher revenue growth still made the growth of gross profit margin. Operation profit was slightly decrease in year 2011, which implies high administrative costs in 2011. This is primarily because of a total substance of ? ,510,000 provisions respect of certain leases and the acquisition with Data Electronics and UK Grid, the costs of which were accounted in operational exceptional items in consolidated income statement. Figure 2 Profitability Ratios (PreTPM- Pre-tax profit margin, PostTPM- Post-tax profit margin) The pre-tax profit margin has also significantly improved from near 23. 5 % to about 25 % in 2011. One of reasons of this improvement is the gains on hostile exchange. The most important reason should be the write make of costs incurred on refinancing, which was an ? 00m five-year financing agreement with Barclays, HSBC, Lloyds Banking Group and RBS from last year. Unlike PreTMP, post-tax profit margin has drop ped impressively to about 17. 6 %. This may be mainly because of the dramatically increment in both current tax and deferred tax. Figure 3 Profitability Ratios (ROCE- Returns on capital employed, ROE- Returns on virtue) Figure 3 shows that The Telecity Groups bonny ROE is comparable to industry ratio which is 7. 1% up to year 2010. However, in terms of growth, the trend is dramatically going down from 2009, which is despite the fact that both total equity and profit after tax nurse been improved. However, the growth of profit was not in pace with the equity. In fact, this makes sense when take into account the companys expansion strategy, which has been creation successfully employ by setting up new data centres across Europe. A big money has been invested in this expansion program, which in turn provided the company high potential turn-over. In general, financial analysts consider return on equity ratios in the 15-20% range as representing attractive levels of investment qualit y. In this sense, the companys performance is healthy with regards to efficiency of profitability.ROCE is one of Telecity Group key performance indicator, which is added to evaluate companys strategy of focusing earnings return from investment. ROCE was decrease during year 2011, which was due to the companys capacity expansion programme and acquisitions effect. Even though, the companys performance in terms of generating returns is healthy in comparison with industry average rate at about 8%. Liquidity Rations Liquidity ratios are to measure a companys ability to consecrate off its short-term financial obligations (Atrill and McLaney, 2011).Figure 4 Liquidity Ratios In theory, the higher current ratio is better as it clearly identifies the companys ability to pay off short debts fund its on-going operations. (Investpedia, 2009) In the case of Telecity Group, its average current ratio shows that the current assets are not able to pinnacle its current liabilities. This is mainly b ecause the company has invested a big money into companys capacity expansion program and acquisition, which are holding most of companys capital. However, the average rate is comparable to the industry as a whole at 0. 8. Trade receivable days are healthy between 25 and 40 days over the year from 2009 to 2011, there is even a decrease from 40 days to 35 days in year 2011. This is due to the demanding digital economy market. Financial Gearing Financial gearing happens when business is financed in a way of borrowing (Atrill and McLaney, 2011). The analysis of gearing ratios is to evaluate the businesss level of gearing, which is the key factor of assessing risk. Figure 5 Gearing Rations (D/E- Debts to equity, ND/E- Net debt to equity)Figure 5 shows that gross debt to equity has increased from about 30% to over 60% in year 2011 after a slightly decreasing in year 2010, which indicates Telecity Group is highly geared in 2011. This is because the significantly increase of non-current bor rowing for companys capacity expansion program and the two acquisitions. Net debt to equity is concerned with company cash to repay the borrowings. It has impressively increased to more than 60% as well demonstrating that risk exists at Telecity Groups failure. Figure 6 Gearing Ratios (IC- interest covre, NIC- Net interest cover) Interest cover ratio measures the amount of operating profit available to cover interest payable(Atrill and McLaney, 2011). As can be seen from figure 6, gross interest cover has fallen from 11 % to 10. 4 % in 2011. In terms of net interest cover which takes into account finance income, the cover ratios were slightly increased. Overall, the figures are exhibit that Telecity Group has the strong ability to service its debt. Cash flow analysis CFPS is concerned with the company ability of generating cash. Therefore, it is usually referred by analysts for more accurate measure of a companys financial situation.Figure 7 Cash flow ratios (EPS- clams per share ) The CFPS has increased from 37 pence in 2009 to 60 pence in 2011. The EPS is averagely higher then CFPS as we would commonly expected. Both EPS and CFPS have increased over the two years. The main reasons for the increase and the difference between CFPS and EP as follows 1. gallery in foreigner exchange 2. Movement in trade receivables and trade payables 3. Depreciation charge 4. represent of exceptional items To sum up, the net cash flow from operating activities has significantly improved by 25 % to over ? 120million. Over ? 00 million was spent on investment activities, which include capacity expansion program and acquisition activities. enthronisation analysis Investment ratios are designed to help shareholder to assess the returns on their investment (Atrill and McLaney, 2011). Earnings per share have risen from 19p to 21p in 2011, which is basically because of the increasing profit margin over the year. Conclusion As can be seen from above, the Telecity Group plc has gone through a stable healthy financial year with regards the implementation of its growth strategy. Telecity Groups profitability stayed stable and healthy in the near two years. The low profit increment was due to the companys expansion and acquisition strategy. Given the fact that data centre services is demanding in digital economy, Teleicty Groups successfully expansion and acquisition will in turn make big returns. Liquidity is poor in terms of ability to cover its current liabilities. However, given the industry ratio being 0. 58, it is comparable healthy in the market. Furthermore, the short trade receivable days imply the high market demands in the data centre industry. Companys gearing has risen to extremely high level due to its growth strategy. From investors perspective, there would be risk of investing in the case of companys failure. However, take into the consideration of the characters of data centre industry, which are demanding the high capacity, connectivity and flexib le services, Telecity group are in no way to failure as it has achieved successful implementation of its business across Europe and gained the potential of attracting new contract with exiting as well as new customers. Overall, the Telecity has been seeking the best cause within the data centre industry as a leading provider of premium carrier-neutral data centres. As the result of its successful capacity expansion and acquisitions, the come on high turnover is inevitably. Role of Women in Forest Management

- Cudia, Jane Victoria A. February 23, 2011 2007-15891Soc Sci 180 Role of Women in Forest Management Increasingly, the role of innate battalions in quality management and conservation had been recognized on the international level. Even if forest management and conservation had been an indigenous practice since time immemorial, recognition of indigenous peoples roles started only three or four decades ago. However, indigenous peoples as protectors of the environment are taken as a whole disregarding the division of roles and differences as contributing factors to the continuous practice of forest management and conservation. In terms of IP roles in forest management and conservation, gender is a rattling important thing to consider. Given an indigenous social and political context, the management of forests is communal. In general, forest management is primarily the domain of men. Womens participation on the other hand primarily lies in forest protection because there is an int imate relationship between IP women and the forest (Caguioa, 2011).However, problem lies in the want of recognition in national policies as to the roles of IP women in forest management and conservation. The long forest of Brgy. Agawa, Besao, Mt. Province is a communal forest dual-lane by different communities managed mostly by indigenous peoples. For the people of Brgy. Agawa, the forest or langdas is the source of livelihood and a place where their unique culture thrive, peerless of the major features of indigenous peoples. In terms of livelihood, the langdas is the source of wild fruits and animals, lumber, and firewood. In the indigenous law they practice, selling of pine lumber is prohibited. Also, outsiders are prohibited from getting anything from the langdas making the practice sustainable. In terms of tradition and culture, they believe that there are spirits guarding the rivers and forests. This is one of the reasons why indigenous peoples do not operate the forest re sources. Also, they manage the forest in a sustainable way because of the belief that their ancestors, who were buried in sacred places, mingle with their affairs. The role of women in environment protection, forest management, and conservation is very significant. Two of the key informants of the study conducted by Caguioa (2011) and her colleagues are old women who spent most of their life living in the area. The people of Brgy. Agawa, has a history of resistance in protecting the langdas and the environment. One sign of protest they had done before was the exposure of older womens breast to countervail people who wanted to operate saw mills in the area back in the 1940s. In response to the secret resin tapping activities done to pine trees that operated during the 1970s, women of Besao secretly removed the plastic catchers and burned all of it.In general, women of Agawa, Besao, Mt. Province show their protest in the regional and national level in impedance of road construction, mining, and logging projects that will ruin the langdas. Amidst globalization, vulgar consumerism, high demands from the market, and laws that treat us all equals sometimes even without regard to culture, the people of Brgy. Agawa, Besao, Mt. Province especially women managed the forest in a sustainable way. Following their traditions and belief systems, they had managed to preserve the forest by following natural mechanisms to restore the forest.Given the resources and knowledge systems we have as members of the dominant and so called developed society, we should devise forest management and conservation mechanisms that are easy and applicable. However, due to a market-driven economy we engage in, we have no control over our resources anymore. The working mechanism that works today is what the market demands, the market gets even at the expense of the environment and the people who manages to protect and conserve the forest.Forest management, although primarily dominated by men, i t should be the domain of all even if there are differences in gender. As seen in the case of Brgy. Agawa, Mt. Province, women had huge contributions in forest management and conservation. It all goes down to this in effective forest management and conservation, gender roles and differences have a lot to offer. Reference Caguioa, M. C. (2011). Racism in America Essay

ReconstructionBy9/9/20131. Columbian historian Eric Foner (1983) quotes W. E. B. Dubois in calling reconstruction a splendid failure (p.16). After study the events of late 19th century, defend whether or not you agree with his position. What are the long-term implications? In my opinion the one of the largest mistakes that was made was the amount of racism that calm continued in America. Still to this day there is a large amount of racism in America, the only difference is it is not just amid unclouded and blacks. When it comes to racism for some reason it seems all races and all people cant just get along. Growing up in the confederation I have seen this offset printing hand. The problem is now if there is any kinds of disagreement between races it is blown way out of proportion. A small lawsuit would be the Travon Martin case. This case should of not had half of the publicity it did, but because it was a crime that was white on black people took it as a nauseate crime. The problem in my opinion is it was not even white on black and half of America still seems to think it was. When people get something in there heads they are going to adorn their own twist on what they think happened and it will cause things to get out of hand.I believe the emancipation Proclamation was intended to be the right step in fixing a problem. The problem still existed because even when it comes to law officials there is racism to this day. I have seen police officers that treat people that are not the same race as them differently because that is the way they were raised. That to me is something that is unaccept equal, if you are a police officer or a person in a similar position and they still are using race to make decisions it creates more problems in the first place. On the other side some people attempt to use their race to benefit themselves because they are a minority. I went to school with a new-fashioned African American that was picked on because of the color o f his skin, he was new to our school and was moved into our school because his school was flooded when a hurricane came and flooded his school. Some students precept a chance to pick on someone because they were different, they talk, look, and act different than others. I saw this happening and became friends with him because I do not believe in this at all. Another studentthat came in wanted to play sports and thought he was the best player on the field. He did not make the team and he filed a complaint with the state of North Carolina saying the reason he did not make the team was because of his race. He was then transferred from our school to be given a chance to play somewhere else. To me this was someone trying to take advantage of their race in a negative way alone because the student did not get his way to begin with. 4. Identify one significant leader in the Populist movement and give a apprize synopsis of this persons contributions, failures, and successes in bringing abo ut the ideas of populismIn 1890 Populists won control of the Kansas state legislature, and Kansan William Peffer became the political partys first U.S. Senator. Peffer, with his long white beard, was a humorous figure to many Eastern journalists and politicians, who saw little evidence of Populism in their states and often treated the party as a jocosity (1890, 2000). Western and Southern Populists gained a large amount of support even though the other parties felt this way. Populists presidential candidate, James B. Weaver actually was able to win over one million votes. Because of fraud, intimidation, and violence by the Southern Democrats the party still failed to make any further gains. One of the largest pieces of success was the party being officially founded because of the merger of the Farmers Alliance and the Knights of Labor. Because of all the negative things going on because of the Democrat and Republicans all going against the Populist party it made it rattling hard to continue this party and keep it functioning. Two main factions had appeared. One, the fusion Populists, sought to merge with the Democrats, using the threat of independent organization to force changes in the major partys platform. The Populist organization in Kansas had already fusedover the bitter protest of those who considered this a sell-out. Fusionists argued that the regionally based ordinal party could never hold national power the best strategy was to influence a major party that could (1890, 2000). The Second faction was called mid-roaders and suspected that classless leaders wanted to destroy the third-party threat. The Populists party also wanted to schedule the national convention before the Republican and Democrats were able to hold theirs. This would be a fight that was lost and they would have to hold their meeting after themajor-party meetings. In my opinion the larger parties where using their size and power to make it very sticky for the Populists party to st ay in tact and eventually got what they wanted when it was done away with. The Populists began serving more as a symbol for the Republicans and their nomination that the Populists put through would even begin to ignore the party even though they were the ones who nominated him.Reference1890.
